Basketball Shooting Drills – Ray Allen

Ray Allen, one of my favorite shooters and one of the best NBA shooters of all time, is featured in this video going over some of his basketball shooting drills. He also covers some shooting fundamentals that are the hallmark of all great shooters, like getting up with your legs, making sure you follow through, and working on your free throws for consistency. What I really like about this video is that the drills it reviews can be used by players and coaches of all ages. Ray is also a great guy to watch and learn from, as his mechanics and fundamentals are solid.

Regarding the fundamentals, he talks about picking up, moving on, and getting consistency. Picking up your jump shot is important for building power for your shot and also getting high on defenders who are rushing to block your shot. As Ray says, make sure your knees are bent. Also, staying crouched ensures you have a nice low center of gravity. This gives you better balance and accuracy. As in so many other sports, the short man wins. Every time he feels his shot misses, Ray comes to the free throw line to set up his shot and get the rhythm back. This is the place where you can calibrate your shot and find consistency using your free throw routine and rhythm.

The first basketball shooting drill you do here can be used for all ages. I would recommend that unless you are college or professional, you use a variation of “Plus 1, Minus 1” or even “Plus 2, Minus 1”. The second drill showed that it works by scoring on a pass coming off a screen.

This guy holds the regular-season record for most 3-pointers made (269 in 2005-06), so there’s something we can all learn from Ray Allen. Enjoy!
