Change your way of thinking and change your life

Dennis works as a factory worker during the day and as a security guard at night. You need both of these incomes to stay afloat on your bills. He has Wednesday off from both jobs and that is the day he does everything. Yes, he is tired all the time, but hey, how else is he expected to make a living?

One Wednesday, Dennis attended a seminar given by motivational speaker Dawn Fields and discovered that his life purpose is to be a writer. He always liked to write. He never took it seriously, but it was always something he did that helped him get in touch with his creative side and he really enjoyed it.

After the seminar, Dennis was crazy about his writing. He thought he would bring some notepads and pencils to his job as a security guard and instead of watching television while on duty, he would spend his free time writing.

The day after attending the seminar, Thursday, he was diligent with his writing. But after writing three pages, he tore it up and told himself it was horrible. It started again. This time, he didn’t make it past the first page before crumpling up the paper and throwing it in the trash. He started over and this time made it to page four before deciding he was just not a good writer. What was I thinking? I couldn’t write anything that no one was interested in reading. It just wasn’t good enough.

He wasn’t even good at English when he was in high school. You can’t even remember how many times you brought home a C or a D in English. He can still hear his father say, “Wow, you must be really dumb.”

That is all. It is foolish. He knew it. How could he be a writer if he’s a fool? That motivational speaker was the cause of all this. If it weren’t for her prompting him to think that he could do this, he would never have tried and therefore would not have to put himself in this position that now makes him feel so miserable.

You see, Dennis will never be the writer he was meant to be, unless and until he changes the way he thinks about himself. At some point, Dennis or Dennis’s father, or maybe someone else, has convinced Dennis that he is stupid and cannot write. Although Dennis loves to write and sees writing as a way to express himself creatively, he believes that his writing is not good enough for others to read or enjoy.

Dennis has a problem. But it is a problem that can be solved.

Many of us know that we have the ability to do something wonderful and enjoyable with our lives, but we allow ourselves and others to sabotage our efforts. We listen to negative information and take it into our minds as if this negative information were actually facts about us. Before we know it, we begin to believe that it is true.

The solution: learn to think positive.

Yes, Dawn. I know that. I’ve heard it a thousand times. But how can I think positive when I have all this negative information inside of me that has been inside of me for years? Easier said than done.

Well, I am not going to lie to you and tell you that it is simple and if you do XYZ for tomorrow you will be able to eliminate all the negative doubts you have about yourself and replace them with positive thoughts.

But what I will tell you is how to start turning your doubts about yourself into positive feelings that will help you believe that you can live the life you were born for. And that the more you tell yourself that this is true, the more you will begin to believe that it is true, thus pushing all the negative garbage that was inside of you out of your mind.

Here is the key and the action point for this week. Learn to develop your imagination. Let’s use our example, Dennis, to show how you would use your imagination to remove your self-doubt.

o Step # 1: Use your imagination to visualize yourself in the position you want to be. While Dennis is in his security guard position, instead of watching television, he should close his eyes and imagine himself as a world-famous and best-selling author. Imagine you are touring the world to promote your
famous book. Imagine promoting your book on Oprah and having her book as part of your book club. Imagine that you are living the lifestyle of a best-selling author.

o Step # 2: Pray. Dennis should pray and tell the Lord that he wants to live his life using the talents the Lord so thoughtfully gave him. You must ask God to open your channels of creativity so that your creativity can flow and
You can write freely and be sure of yourself.

o Step # 3: Give yourself positive affirmations every day. Dennis should tell himself that he is a good writer. You should look in the mirror and say, “I’m a great writer. I’m the best. I’m a best-selling author.” You should say this as many times during the day as you remember. Even if you don’t have a mirror to look into, you can still tell yourself until you start to believe it.

o Step # 4: Become aware of your thoughts. If Dennis finds himself saying that he is not a writer; that you are stupid and cannot write a best-seller, you must stop immediately and change your mind. Replace negative thoughts with positive ones.

Your brain works constantly. It never stops. Even when you are asleep, your brain continues to function fully. Become aware of the thoughts you have during the day. If you find yourself thinking, “Oh, I could never do that.” “I always make mistakes”. “I’m not good enough.” “I am not worthy.”

STOP IMMEDIATELY.

Swap your thoughts for positive ones. “I could do that if I try hard enough.” “I’m never wrong. I just have to practice more.” “I’m good enough.” “I am worthy”.

With practice, Dennis began to change his mindset. He started to believe that he COULD be a writer and that he COULD write a best seller. He continually prayed to God and followed his instincts and hunches. His creativity began to flow. While in his security guard position, he worked and worked and worked on his writing.

Today, he has finished his first book and has a publisher interested in it. It will only be a matter of time before you can be the best-selling author you dreamed of.

If Dennis hadn’t decided to change his mind, he would have spent his entire life working two low-paying jobs that were neither rewarding nor satisfying. He would never have started living the life God had planned for him.

And you? What thoughts are you saying to yourself? Swap your negative thoughts for positive thoughts and your life will change.
