SMART Goals still need to pass the ACID test to reach them – learn how!

Goal setting doesn’t work. They are not supposed to work. You are supposed to work! The purpose of setting goals is to inspire and motivate you to work smarter and with more resources. Do the goals achieve that purpose? Yes! Goals that are above the line do it and goals below do not. Simple as that.

So what do I mean by “above the line and below the line”? Your target passes the ACID test or fails. If it passes, it is above the line. So what is the ACID test? I will assume your goal is SMART (specific, measurable, actionable, relevant / realistic and time bound). Any article or book on goals advocates the importance of making them SMART and I wanted to make sure to include it again, as there is power in repetition.

However, a target can be SMART and still fail the ACID test.

The elements of the ACID test are as follows:

FORalignment: your goal should be in FORalignment with YOUR values. If your lens is not authentic for what it is and what it is, it is simply a suggestion, of what freaks you have bought. In this case, it’s all about you.

VSapacity: you must have the mental, emotional and physical capacity VSability to achieve the goal. Be willing to admit that you may not have the skill set or are unwilling to achieve the goal. If you’re 48 years old, 5’7 “tall, and haven’t been on a basketball court since high school, chances are you’re not going to be the starting power forward for an NBA team anytime soon, no matter how hard. INTELLIGENT write the goal.

Inspiring: Your goal should IGet inspired to be willing to do whatever it takes to get there. The association with the achievement of the goal should make you feel that you can go beyond the upper limits that you have faced up to this point.

Determination: you must remain Deternal in the face of all adversity. Published authors suffer dozens, if not hundreds, of rejections before being published. Most of the success stories experienced massive failures on their way to victory. Most overnight hits will tell you that they’ve done it their entire life.

Here are the four ACID test questions to see if your goal will do the job of getting you to do the work it takes to make it happen.

1. Is the objective aligned with my values?

2. Do I have or can I develop the capacity to achieve this goal?

3. Am I inspired to do whatever it takes to achieve this goal?

4. Do I have the determination to overcome inevitable adversities and setbacks?

If you can honestly answer these four questions in the affirmative, you are confident that your efforts will pay off.
