Sports Predictions That Came

Sport prediction is a popular application of ML, with studies leveraging features specific to different sports. However, the nature of sports data can obscure models’ performance in this domain. To evaluate this, we collected Sports Predictions from four major North American sporting leagues for 30 years. Relative accuracy was measured using Kruskal-Wallis H tests and Mann-Whitney U tests.

The Eagles outscored their opponents by a wide margin during the regular season and were able to capitalize on an incredible running game led by quarterback Michael Vick. They also have a ferocious pass rush, and that should give them the edge in a high-scoring affair. It’s hard to imagine a more entertaining Super Bowl than this one. The Philadelphia Eagles will win, but it’s going to be a nail-biter. The Eagles are the better team, but they will have to execute well in order to beat a team that has been unstoppable all year.

Despite a fumble by Jalen Hurts, the Eagles’ offense has dominated the first half. They have the best rushing attack in the NFL, and their pass catchers are elite. They also are converting on third- and fourth-and-short plays at an amazing rate. So put any talk of a penalty flag deciding the game in cold storage. This was a thrilling contest that came down to the final play.

Sports Predictions That Came True

In June 2014, Sports Illustrated published a cover story predicting the Houston Astros would win the World Series in 2017. The team followed through, beating the Dodgers in a seven-game Fall Classic and becoming a model for championship teams. Despite a rocky start to the 2021 season, the Astros dominated the ALCS to advance to their first World Series since the controversial sign-stealing scandal of 2017. Now the Astros are one game away from another title after shutting out the Red Sox 5-0 in Game 6 at Minute Maid Park on Friday night.

After a slow start, the Astros roared back with strong performances by young pitchers Framber Valdez and Yordan Alvarez. Their defense helped as well. In the seventh inning, with runners at first and second, Boston ace Nathan Eovaldi hit a ball that Jose Altuve threw to third baseman Carlos Correa for an out. It was a heads-up double play that set the stage for an eventual victory.

The Giants and Dodgers may not get as much attention as the Yankees and Red Sox, but they are just as fierce rivals. In fact, the two teams have met in the World Series three times in the last decade. The Dodgers were the best team in baseball in 2021, winning 107 games and finishing two games ahead of the Colorado Rockies for the division title. They then swept the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NLCS and beat the New York Yankees in the World Series.

The Dodgers have a strong chance to win the NL West this year. They have a good lineup and solid pitching. They lead the league in home runs, triples, and stolen bases. They also rank fourth to eighth in the majors in ERA, strikeouts, and walks. And while they didn’t make any big moves in the offseason, they have Clayton Kershaw, Julio Urias, and Gonsolin ready to step up. They should be able to surpass their 95.5 regular-season win total.
