Villain Costume Parties and How to Throw a Great One

Do you remember how much fun it was, as a child, to dress up and believe that you were someone else? It didn’t matter if you dressed up in super villain costumes and/or superhero costumes. It’s also fun to watch the antics of young children and how much they enjoy taking on new personalities.

The same goes for adults going to a party. Adults can have fun normally. However, when you upgrade it to a themed party, it becomes a spectacular photo event. Most people set up a hero or medieval theme for these parties, but you can have a lot more fun if you have a villain at the same party.

Dressing up in villain costumes gives us permission to be a little wilder and crazier as a temptress or witch, pirate or executioner. Who would like to dress up as magneto or one of the mutant brothers? Let’s face it people, playing a villain can be just as much fun, if not more.

Costume parties spark conversations that differ from the norm and dress up as the villain even more. Everyone knows about heroes and the basics of why they became that. However, not many people know much about the details of the villains. Wearing villain costumes sparks a different line of conversation and can, as a theme, make your party much livelier. There’s a lot to be said for using your talking point on you. No more boring talk about ticks from the cat next door. Now you can talk in character about how much you’d like to roast the cat next door!!!!

Also, if a couple has a fight at the party while they are in costume, who will think about it the most? Everyone knows that villains fight each other!!

Where to start:

If you are going to have your theme party, villain costumes, you are going to need a plan. That is, if like other villains, you want to be remembered for taking over the world or at least taking over the party.

So here are the steps for the world… Um, I mean, party domination:

  1. who to invite
  2. decide on a topic/genre
  3. where to get your villain costumes
  4. party date
  5. party games/prizes
  6. food to prepare
  7. protection and security

Who to invite:

This should go without saying, other villains, but seriously, friends or family as appropriate. You want people there to add to the party atmosphere, not bring it down with obscene drunken behavior.

Decide on a theme/genre

Decide on a villain costume party theme. You can keep it generic by allowing villain costumes from historical or mythical references, or from television like cartoons, sitcoms, or movies, and the list goes on. Just browse the villain costumes and see what’s available, then it’s all about adding accessories. Some themes you can choose from are historical, mythical, super villains, sitcom villains, alien villains, walking dead, ghost villains, comic book villains, etc.

Where to get your villain costumes:

You are going to want elaborate villain costumes that are of the highest quality that you and your guests can wear more than once. So they can always be used at office costume parties, Halloween or other more generic costume parties. Best of all, you can save time, money, gas, and energy by shopping online.

Party date:

Be sure to give yourself plenty of time for your costumes to be delivered. Also allow extra time if your guests will need to purchase or make their own villain costumes. The thing is, by giving your guests plenty of notice of the party, they’ll be able to plan ahead and organize their villain costumes and wmd’s- (weapons of mass distraction), ummm I mean props. Then your plans will kick into gear and your party will get going. First the street, then the world!

Board Games/Prizes:

To make your costume party worth remembering, you can have prizes for the best costume or, if it is a large gathering, for the best villain costumes of each gender. Remember people, personalize! The villains are in favor. Death rays, red double-edged lightsabers, unique superpowers for doomsday devices.

Remember that friends and family who make an effort to groom themselves have more fun. Having photos of them dressed in their villain costumes will stand out in the photo album. It’s definitely worth having an area set aside for photos at the start of the party because when people arrive in their villain costumes, that’s when they’ll look their best. Ask them to strike a pose, it’ll put them in a good mood, not to mention make a great picture.

food to prepare:

Your food can also have a theme. Just make sure there’s enough, as you don’t want your villains to go somewhere else to find food and not come back. Make sure you know what food allergies your guests have, if any.

Protection and security

Before you have the party day or night, there are a couple of things you need to check off. Have the local police in your pocket… Um… I mean, let them know you’re having a theme party. Give them the:

  • Date in which it will be.
  • Start time and approximate end time.
  • Approximate number of people who will attend.
  • Also the name of any security company you will be using at night.

If you arrange for the minions… Um… Security guards to be at the party. Get them into the spirit as well by having them wear a superficial shirt marked security. Be sure to feed them too. A minion marches on his stomach… Not a pretty sight, but fun to watch… Mwah hahahahha!! I’m bringing this up again, but make sure you get a list of foods your guests are allergic to (check with the minions too,… Hey, you use them, there are your minions!). This way, you can be sure that the food you order or prepare will be safe for everyone.

You don’t want to change the theme of your wardrobe from villain to “who done it” with you as the prime suspect. “It was Dr. Doom in the kitchen with the peanuts!”

The best part of the villain themed costume party is that trespassers are easily recognized and can be asked to leave. Otherwise, if you can see that they are looking to cause trouble, don’t confront them, especially alone.

Arrange for more than one of your multiple guests to take a photo with their camera phone – discreetly! Before or while talking to them. If you meet any resistance, don’t push it. Walk away, call the police (who should know about the party ahead of time) and inform them of what has happened or is happening. This way, you have your mug shot in case something happens, and at least the police will be on their way.

Have a first aid kit available in case someone insults themselves in any way. As with any party, tip off your neighbors or invite them over, just make sure the invitation states that those in villain costumes are allowed in. You can also decorate your house with villain propaganda and also have villain games and trivia questions. People love prizes.

Have the numbers of a couple of taxi companies handy in case you need to call someone, also the number of the local hospital and police station. You can also let your guests know ahead of time that you suspect the police will be patrolling the area as well. That way, if you have friends who tend to drink too much and get behind the wheel, this knowledge should make them think twice.

Finally, with all that said, have fun, that’s why you’re having a villain themed costume party after all, and email me a couple of pictures. I would love to put them on the site.
