Why do you have to send flowers on Valentine’s Day?

That is all! This is the year I no longer have to walk past my co-workers’ cubicles with an averted look. I can finally partake in the outpouring that occurs on Valentine’s Day when all the women who are loved by their men receive flowers, candy, and other public displays of affection. I have a boyfriend. And I just know he’ll be considerate and send me flowers for Valentine’s Day. At least he better!

I know, I know, I’ve become one of those! Call it low self-esteem or a privilege mentality if you want, but I need to know that I’m important to him. I am a romantic and in my defense, I intend to give him flowers too and plan a special dinner. Receiving flowers or any other sweetly decorated miscellaneous item means that you are loved and appreciated. He also says that you think she is worthy of her beauty.

Flowers are the perfect gift for Valentine’s Day. You don’t have to give the most expensive fix and there are so many varieties, colors and price points to choose from. As the old saying goes, when you can’t find the words, let the flowers speak for you! Women have always loved chivalrous men, and in the world of women, giving flowers is about as chivalrous as it gets.

Did you know that each type and color of flower has a unique meaning? If you think of the flowers as your words and the bouquet as your message, it’s as easy as choosing the matching flower that will let your loved one know exactly what you’re thinking. Flowers do not have to signify eternal love or commitment. In fact, if you want to make sure your flowers say exactly what you mean, here’s a guide to help you:

roses:
Red or burgundy: true love
Lavender: love at first sight
Long Stemmed: I will always remember you
Orange: passionate interest
Pink or Coral: Enthusiasm; longed for
Pink: Happiness
hot pink: thank you
Tea roses – I will always remember
White: Eternal love; Innocence
Yellow: Friendship
Gold: Achievement

Other Miscellaneous Flowers:
Carnations: love and fascination
Gerber daisies: beauty and innocence
Iris: faith, hope and wisdom
Orchids: rare delicate beauty
Peruvian Lilies: Friendship
Sunflowers: warmth and adoration
Tulips: Love, Grace and Elegance

It really doesn’t matter if you pour yourself into the meaning of each flower and just buy the prettiest flowers you see, she’ll know you care. She could accidentally shower her with lavender (jealousy) or marigolds (despair) and she’ll think you’re the sweetest. Women may not remember the kind things she said or did last week, but you can be sure that she will remember the last time she received flowers. It really is sad that we equate how thoughtful or romantic a guy is by the number of flower arrangements we receive, but it’s true nonetheless.

So this Valentine’s Day, rack up some points, stay out of the doghouse, and let her know how much you love her. Sending flowers!
