Confessions of a Makeup Artist: Flawless Foundation for Fall

In the process of reviewing, refilling, and updating my mother-in-law’s makeup bag for fall, I came across a great new find for fall…

COVERGIRL/OLAY Simply Ageless Foundation with SPF 22.

It’s a unique combination of cream foundation and moisturizer! A perfect combination for fall.

It glides on with medium coverage (it takes away my redness but I can still see my freckles) and only takes one small application. It’s easy to blend and goes completely matte (you can spray it with toner or water if you want a wetter look).

I have loved the everyday mineral foundation so far. In the fall, when the weather and my skin get a little drier, it tends to get a little itchy. If this happens to you too, try layering your medium moisturizer under the minerals. Wait until the moisturizer is 90% absorbed into your skin and then apply the mineral foundation. Again, spray with a light toner or water to eliminate the “dusty” look. Sheer Coverage is still my favorite brand and it’s pretty easy to find these days. I like that you can change the mix of colors, adding light or dark, depending on the time of year.

If you prefer no makeup or much lighter coverage, consider a tinted moisturizer. Our skin needs something to protect us from premature aging and environmental damage. Try a few products, there are many to choose from. My favorite is still Laura Mercier. The coverage is excellent and they are easy to blend. I use these for photo shoots all the time, it still allows your skin to show through.

Do you need more coverage? Great, sensitive skin? Try Cinema Secrets Foundation. At full strength I use it to cover up tattoos. For lighter full coverage wet your sponge and go thinner with concealing pigmentation shades.

TIPS for an Impeccable Face:

1. Moisturize at night, when the skin is renewed.

2. Exfoliate regularly, this removes all dead skin and flakiness for better makeup application.

3. Try a primer, a silicone based product on top of moisturizer allows for a smooth surface and your foundation will glide on “like butter”.

4. Go 1/2 shade darker when choosing your foundation color. If your foundation is too light, it will wash you out and make you look tired.

5. Blend the base! Towards the ears, over the tip and sides of the nose, down and over the jaw line, and over the neck. Always combine it!

6. Less is more, let your natural skin and freckles show. Unless you’re in a soap opera or on stage, thick foundation is OFF.

7. Pigment, depending on your skin defects, choose a foundation with coverage. The application can be light, but a stronger pigment will give you better coverage (this is the key).

8.Sun protection. Whether your makeup has sunscreen or not, protect your skin from further damage today. Even though the summer is over, keep the SPF.

9. Keep your hands out of your face. My mother told me this every five minutes growing up. It’s true. Most bacteria travel from our hands to our face creating breakouts.

10. SMILE. This is the most important. Who will notice any of your flaws with that bright and radiant smile. Result = flawless face!
