Ecological Transportation on your Holidays

If you’re planning a trip and want to get there the greenest way, there are ways to do it. And once you arrive at your destination, you can ensure that any trip you take is also green. You just need to do a little planning ahead to find the greenest travel options.

Ecological transport

1. How to get there

Planes, trains, cars… Of these, planes are the worst, but if you fly with an airline that has taken steps to reduce its carbon footprint by eliminating excess waste and recycling as much as possible, it will be better. Southwest is one airline you might want to consider that has done a lot to reduce its carbon footprint.

When it comes to trains, this isn’t a bad way to travel and it’s not terrible for the environment. In addition, it is a very picturesque way to travel. If you’re taking a road trip and driving, consider renting a hybrid vehicle if you don’t have one.

2. Hotels

Look for hotels that use green programs. Also check the location of the hotel and make sure there is enough public transportation nearby that you can use to get where you need to go. Once in your hotel, notify that you do not need new towels every day. Turn off the lights when you leave the room and turn the thermostat up or down when you’re not in the room to use less electricity.

3. Travel when you are there

Although you checked your hotel to see if it has public transportation, consider finding other ways to travel as well. Can you walk to many places instead of having to be driven there? How about renting a bike for the week and commuting by bike instead? Finding alternative ways to get to destinations and then using nature as much as possible will really help you keep your transportation green during your vacation.

4. Leave it cleaner than when you got there

While it’s not about transportation, it’s always good practice to pick up trash when you see it. It can help balance your carbon footprint if you’re having trouble finding the greenest forms of transportation.

Support local environmental efforts by donating or even volunteering at some point while you’re there. Also shop at local farms while you’re there instead of going to the grocery store. You will be able to taste local products. However, you may need to be careful about what you do if you are out of the country. Check with your hotel to see which local produce stores you can go to; they should be able to point you in the right direction.

Vacations at home are also a great way to reduce your carbon footprint by exploring things in your own area and being in nature. Traveling definitely takes a toll on the environment, but if you choose to go away, you can still reduce your carbon footprint when you travel.
