modern farmhouse design

There is no absolute prototype for a country house, but most of us can recognize one when we see one. By definition, the originals were located on farms and were an integral part of the life and work of the peasant families who lived there.

Depending on when and where those houses were built, they could be made of stone, brick, tile, or clapboard. Most of the cortijos had a porch since there was no air conditioning and many agricultural and family tasks were carried out there. The porch roof provided protection from the sun and rain, but allowed the cool breeze to flow through and helped make those hot summers tolerable.

The center of family life in the farmhouse was the kitchen. Meals were prepared and often eaten there, as well as home-made pickles and canned food for the long (up north) winters. In older country houses, a fireplace for cooking was essential. Additional fireplaces were used to heat as many rooms as possible.

I live in an old farmhouse originally built around 1790 and then added on in the 19th century and more recently added on by my family. I have come to appreciate the simple details of the wide hardwood floors and beautiful fireplaces.

When designing a modern country house, porches, wide-plank floors, and beautiful fireplaces are welcome. The floor plan can be center hallway, side hallway, or a variation of the two. Indoor gathering places are just as important today as they were 200 years ago. Modern farmhouses include large, bright kitchens to accommodate the inevitable influx of friends and family. These days, many families spend most of their time in the kitchen cooking, eating, talking, studying, and just visiting. Energy efficiency is important, as some farms use geothermal heating and cooling and solar panels on the barns.

We are lucky to inherit the traditions of our founding families, including their most prized possession, the farm.
