Review of the book Who is there by Dimas Rio

Who’s there? by author Dimas Rio does well to stimulate the imagination with his collection of eclectic short films focused on Asian culture, each one sure to pique interest and send shivers down the spine as well.

First of all, the author Dimas seduces the reader with a solid narration with the story of the title, Who is there? that he is also my personal favorite. This well-polished story takes the reader on a hair-raising journey through the guilt-ridden conscience of a particularly self-centered, alcoholic, drug addict man whose dark psyche draws him into the cold, wet embrace of his fiancée.

Continuing the chills is story 2, titled At Dusk, in which a high school magazine reporter embarks on the task of interviewing a famous mystery writer who shares the latest ghost story with his captive audience and sincere but unprepared.

Next, story 3 The Wandering is tangled with horror as a forgotten lover comes from the grave to visit him bringing retribution in red.

Then story 4 The Voice Canal touches the heart as the border between reality and the supernatural blurs as love briefly holds the lines of communication open between a deceased father and his grieving son.

And last but not least, the 5 story The Forest Protector, has an abused mother and son leaving behind an unhappy and brutal past with the mother looking forward to an uncertain future, but with a renewed perspective on nature. of humanity and her duty as a protective mother.

Altogether, Who’s There makes for a satisfyingly dark, scary, and even melancholic read that will keep your hair on end. An interesting addition to some stories is the inclusion of intriguingly creepy poetic verse that does well to add fuel to the already articulately cohesive horror shorts. The five stories included in this compilation, a literary journey into Asian-based horror, not only handle chilling tales effectively, presenting elements of Indonesian supernatural culture that shine with author Dimas’ deft storytelling skills wrought with detail that They define the scene, well plotted twists and turns in the story that keep the reader fascinated throughout the reading. Also enhancing the read further is the perspective on horror from another culture, offering a unique take on fear-inducing scenarios that, overall, made the read especially compelling.

Ultimately, what stands out in Who’s There is the increasingly hair-raising buildup of tension and terror throughout each story within the entire book, and if you like to settle into an exciting collection of satisfying scary shorts, then surely this book should be the next. your “want to read” list.
