Breed Description

The fox-like Schipperke is a square-built dog with an inquisitive and mischievous appearance. The typical adult female is between 9 and 12 inches, while the adult male is between 11 and 13 inches tall. They usually weigh between 7 and 18 pounds.

Coat

The Schipperke has a thick double coat of medium length. They have soft fur around their faces, but rough fur on their bodies. This breed has a protruding ruff and shorter body fur. This breed is known to go through a process known as “blowing” three times a year for females. During which all the undercoat of this breed sheds in 10 days.

Exercise

The Schipperke is a small dog that is extremely active. They require both physical and mental exercise to stay fit. A moderate walk or a good romp in the yard, or a vigorous game of catch will be enough to keep these dogs exercised.

Temper

Intelligent and independent yet stubborn, the Schipperke is a loving and protective addition to the family. They tend to bond closely with their masters and enjoy the company of children. With a lot of energy, the innate curiosity of this breed makes them stick their noses in everything. This breed is alert and self-assured, making it an excellent watchdog. These dogs are reserved with strangers and will stand on your ground. They love to bark and howl and will usually enjoy playing with other dogs, large or small.

Watch out

The Schipperke is an independent breed that can handle its own grooming. The coat of this breed should be brushed two or three times a week with the use of a brush with firm bristles. But even though they are not heavy shedders, they are known to have “blowing” periods, where they shed their entire undercoat within 10 days.

Training

The Schipperke’s natural intelligence and willingness to learn makes them easy to train. These independent, strong-willed dogs need to be trained firmly and consistently as soon as possible. Although they are intelligent, they have the inclination to have a mind of their own. Therefore, it is important to establish authority early on. Respect training is crucial, and the rules must be applied consistently. Socializing is also important. These dogs are naturally suspicious of strangers, and this breed’s lack of socialization can result in an overly cautious Schipperke.
