Similarities Between the PTE Academic Test and the IELTS

There is a big difference between IELTS and PTE academic test patterns and test formats. But there are some notable similarities. First of all, both are standardized language tests that are carried out to assess the language skills of potential candidates who are willing to pursue a career abroad. Check if the candidates will be able to survive in the new academic environment where only English would be the medium of instruction and communication. Both tests pave the way for the candidate to follow their dreams and fulfill their academic assignments. The concept or idea behind conducting these tests is one.

The next similarity that we can state is that both tests follow the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) standard scale scores while declaring the scores or bands and therefore the scores and bands are accepted in many countries around the world as part of eligibility. education or immigration criteria. These tests are widely accepted around the world due to the standard.

Another similarity that we can notice is in the written part of both tests. For example, the writing task 2 in IELTS is quite similar to the writing essay in the PTE academic test. Both tasks expect candidates to write an essay on the given topic with a slight change in the word limit. In IELTS task 2 essay writing, the word limit will be 250-280 words to write on sheets of paper, while in the PTE-A writing section the word limit for essay writing will be 200 to 300 words and the candidate will have to write it in the system. The evaluation criteria for these two assignments will be similar in that the candidates’ assignment response, grammatical range and precision, lexical resource, and content are evaluated and taken into account when grading.

Another similarity is in reading part of both tests. Multiple-choice questions are present in both tests in which candidates must choose the correct options based on the information provided in the text. The approach to answering these types of questions is similar for both tests. That is, a candidate has to browse and scan the text to search for possible and appropriate answers. The same strategy works for both tests on this question type.

Some elements of the listening portion of both tests have some similarities. Like completing notes in IELTS, listening is similar to filling in the blanks in the academic listening portion of PTE. Here too the approach will be the same. Listen to the recording and find the correct answers. Also, IELTS writing task 1 for academics, that is, writing a report, is similar to the picture description question type in the academic speaking part of PTE. The only difference is the time limit and the response format. The concept is the same, that is, to share the main points of the given image which can be a graph, an image, a diagram, a table or a map. The aforementioned similarities are discussed only to clear up the confusion in the minds of the candidates. So please review them thoroughly to get a better understanding.
