Sony Ericsson W980 review

The Walkman phone is really the most popular Sony Ericsson series phone. The success of the walkman phone is not only due to the excellent music player and sound quality, but also to the features that come with the phone. And the Sony Ericsson W980 that was launched last month, which comes with the 8G internal memory, really makes it stand out from the crowd.

The SE W980’s design is fantastic. As a foldable phone, the Sony Ericsson W980 has a fairly compact dimensions of 92 x 46 x 16.9 mm, with a weight of 100 g. There is an external TFT screen with 262K colors and a resolution of 176 x 176 pixels on the front that is the audio menu that is displayed. The screen blends in perfectly with the opaque surface of the mirror. You won’t notice it has a screen on the front when it’s off. In addition, there are 7 touch sensitive keys below the screen which is the control of the music player. Thus, you can access and navigate your music player without even opening the lid.

The 240 x 320 pixel 2.2-inch main screen that will appear on top once the phone is open can also offer excellent image quality. The navigation buttons and keyboard are below it and you will notice that the buttons on the keyboard are round in shape. That fits the design of the rest. The phone has quite a sticky effect to add sparkle to your listening experience, the transparent bar located at the bottom lights up and flashes, creating a kind of disco effect.

As a walkman phone, the SE W980 can certainly deliver decent sound quality. The Walkman player is the third latest version that supports MP3, AAC, WAV, WMA and also ShakeME function. With 8G of internal memory, you don’t have to worry about storing your music files. However, unfortunately, the phone does not support external memory cards. There is no way for you to store your media files if they exceed the 8G of limitations.

There are some additions to the W980’s features. The most notable feature of the phone would be the FM transmitter. SE W980 is proud to be the first phone to offer this feature. You can use it to stream your music on your phone and share it with your friend at home, office, car, etc. Other specifications such as 3.6Mbps HSDPA data transmission, quad-band connectivity, built-in accelerometer, A2DP stereo Bluetooth, 3D Java games, twin cameras for video calls, FM radio.

So far Sony Ericsson sounds perfect on paper. However, the 3-megapixel camera with no autofocus and no flash would take the phone down. Also, I prefer the phone to be complete with GPS function as it becomes common features for high-end phones. Anyway, every phone has its hassle. If you just want a phone that can play its mp3 player role, then the Sony Ericsson W980 can definitely be your choice.
