The importance of body shots

Why do we use body shots? Many times young fighters don’t understand why this technique is so important. Young fighters are always looking for the big knockout, but knockouts are very difficult to achieve without body shots. Mastering this offensive style is imperative if you’re going to be a fighter.

There are three very important reasons to use body shots. The first is to take your opponent’s legs off, or slow them down. Your opponent will cover their face, body shots will surprise them and throw them off balance, and this will take their legs off. Once you’ve got their legs off, you’ll have them in position to knock them out or at least score points with the judges.

The next reason to use this type of punch is to get your opponent to lower their hands to block their body, thus leaving their heads open for a knockout. After a good body shot your opponent will drop their hands, with the perfect head shot you can score a knockout. I would be using this to set up the knockout, the ultimate in boxing. You can use hooks or hooks, all combined with each other. When the uppercut lands in the perfect spot, the solarplexis, it will knock the wind out of your opponent leaving them wide open for the head knockout.

The last reason is simply the utter punishment the body takes which then breaks your opponent’s will. How does this take down your opponent? They are confused; They don’t know whether to cover their heads or their bodies, they are exhausted from the constant defense. Body shots thrown at close range are much safer than body shots at long range. Long range shots leave you wide open for counterattacks. You can use close range body shots. When you’re in the pocket, your punches should be short and precise with a lot of power behind them. The key to this is to bend your knees as you go. By doing this, you are dominating your opponent, again scoring points with the judges. Not every fight ends in a knockout, but you will definitely gain confidence in the judge’s decisions. In general, you just have to be ruthless as an amateur and professional fighter.

Some of the best body punchers are Roberto Duran and Julio Cesar Chavez.
