Toddler beds: when to go from crib to bed

The question of when to transition your child from their crib to a toddler bed is a very common question among parents. Although there is no clear cut answer, many child experts will say that between the ages of 2 and 3 is a good starting point. Something to keep in mind is that if your child is starting to climb out of the crib, it is time to move from the crib to the bed, otherwise you run the risk of your child getting hurt.

What type of bed is the next question you will have to answer. You obviously have several options to choose from.

Some of the options you have for the first bed after the crib are:

– Bunk beds (for two children) – This is an option if one of your children is at least 6 years old. Children under the age of six should not sleep in a top bunk because top bunks are simply not safe for children under the age of 6.

– Toddler beds may be an option. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that this is a bed your child will eventually outgrow (usually by age 5), and when that happens, he may be spending money again on another bed.

– A full size bed or two single beds is another option. This option costs more in the short term, but this option can save you money in the long run because a double or twin bed is something your child can use throughout their childhood. One thing that can help make a double or twin bed safer for a young child is the use of portable bed rails.

Regardless of which route you choose, always buy a bed from a reputable manufacturer and keep in mind that the cheapest bed is not necessarily the best option. If cost is an issue, a used bed may be an option, as long as you’ve done your homework and feel informed enough to choose high-quality used toddler beds.
