Why use a king bed skirt on a queen mattress?

Sometimes we run out of clean bed skirts available and are forced to use a king size on a queen mattress. Can we adjust it to fit a queen size mattress? With a little creativity, we can. That is, without using scissors and needles.

A queen-size mattress measures 60 by 80 inches, while a king-size bed measures 78 by 80 inches. To remove the excess width, it will be necessary to tuck the bed skirt between the mattress and box spring. What about the excess skirt? Gather the excess and secure it to the bed frame.

While a king-size bed skirt can be adjusted to fit a queen-size mattress, its appearance is another matter to consider. It may not be attractive if it has a tight fit around the box spring, especially if it’s a solid color.

This is the problem with using a king size bed skirt on a queen mattress. That’s the difficulty with the one-piece platform type with the platform fabric secured under the mattress. This is also true for the problem of the bed frame and the height of the mattress for the sagging of the skirt.

The saying that for every problem there is always a solution is true. Today bed skirts come in three separate panels, one panel for each side of the bed. One will find it easy to adjust the drape of the skirt without having to remove the mattress to put it on. They come with pins that allow the skirt to be placed between the box spring and the mattress. Adjust the height and then pin it in place. This type is easy to remove, but not as stable as the other type of construction, as it can lose its proper location.

Older styles typically come in 14″ or 16″ drops, which are often too long or too short considering there is no standard mattress and bed frame height. Actually, a deck bed skirt is not adjustable since it comes in one piece. To remove it, the mattress must first be lifted, which is very cumbersome, but very stable, since it will not lose its place.

How to fit a king size bed skirt to a queen size mattress is quite tricky and not easy. One will need scissors, thread, and a sewing machine, that is, if you want to permanently convert it to fit a queen-size mattress. It is necessary to pull the excess towards the center of the box spring creating a fold down the length of the center until it fits. Then sew along the center crease and then cut off the excess fabric from the just sewn seam. Certainly, newly repaired bedding will not look as stylish as it should. Why bother using a king-size bed skirt on a queen-size mattress when you can use a floor-length bedspread?
