Deathbed visions are typically experiences the dying have where they literally SEE (and often describe) incredible, often transformative and empowering visions during the dying process. Often a dying person will “see” and talk to their spouse, parents, siblings, and other loved ones in the moments before death. Surprisingly, often these rich and robust conversations have a veridical quality, as the information gathered during these “unseen” experiences can LATER be verified by those who witnessed it. What would qualify as verifiable information worth noting? Often, especially in these experiences as reported in the 19th and early 20th centuries BEFORE the widespread availability of INSTANT information: a dying person would report speaking to and seeing a relative “over there” who did NOT yet know they were deceased . . Remember, phones, faxes, and email were NOT the method of fast communication over 100 years ago.

This is NOT quackery or simple sensationalism that can be easily explained away, folks. Many detailed books have been written on the subject, both by SERIOUS scientists, researchers, and students. Elizabeth Kubler Ross, probably the MOST well-known advocate of palliative care and compassionate care for the dying, was a BIG believer in deathbed visions, she believed they DEMONSTRED a rich and robust afterlife, and her work seminal – “on death and dying” is one of many testimonials to his firm belief that death is NOT an end… but just another door into the mystery of this wild ride we call life!
