Do you need a passport?

A passport is an official government document that certifies a person’s identity and citizenship and allows a citizen to travel abroad and, in the case of a United States passport, re-enter the United States.

When will you need a passport?

The answer depends on the country you plan to visit. Many countries require a passport when entering their country. In addition, a document indicating proof of citizenship is always required to re-enter the United States. In some cases (Mexico City, Canada, etc.), a valid driver’s license and birth certificate will suffice as proof of citizenship; however, as stated, many countries require a passport in order to enter their country and the US Department of State “recommends” a passport as proof of citizenship in ALL cases.

Does my child need a passport?

Yes. Anyone traveling to a country that requires a passport must have their own passport regardless of how old it is. The US Department of State has hired additional staff to meet the demand for extraordinary US passport applications. Records are being broken as the Department is working hard to ensure that all US citizens obtain a passport in time for vacations and travel.
The regional agencies have worked during the weekend. Employees have been working overtime to meet demand.
