Home remedies for dandruff: do they work?

Dandruff is one of those irritating problems in more than one sense of the word. Those pesky white flakes that get everywhere and seem to materialize out of nowhere, like they’ve been teleported from some cosmic dandruff warehouse onto your scalp. Chances are you’ve tried commercial dandruff shampoo but you haven’t come out any better from the experiment. So are dandruff home remedies better?

A lot will depend on the type of dandruff you have. Not all dandruff is the same, but the most common forms are dry dandruff and oily dandruff. It stands to reason that no one remedy is going to cope well with both types, so it’s important to determine what type of dandruff you have before deciding on a home remedy.

lime remedy

This works best for oily dandruff. Wash your hair normally and then as part of the last rinse add about a teaspoon of lime or lemon juice, ideally freshly squeezed, but if that’s not practical then juice from the supermarket will have to take its place.

Fenugreek seeds

This is a solution, but many people say that they have found it effective in relieving dry dandruff. You will certainly need to get organized to use this method, as it involves soaking a couple of tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water overnight, then grinding them into a fine paste the next morning. Once you have done that, apply the paste and leave it on your hair for 30 minutes; maybe do it as soon as you wake up and leave it until you’ve eaten your breakfast. Then, rinse the solution out with a natural soap and nut solution instead of regular shampoo.

change your diet

Like many conditions we suffer from, dandruff can be made worse by the food we eat. Changing your diet will often help your diet go away. The best way to do this is to eat natural foods instead of processed ones and stay as close as possible to the balanced diet that is recommended by doctors around the world. It’s also best to eliminate or reduce the usual suspects: caffeine, coffee, alcohol, by now you know the list by heart!

Watch your stress levels

My dandruff goes up and down depending on how stressed I am. The more stress I’m under, the more of those nasty white flakes appear. If that’s the case for you, it’s worth investigating ways to reduce your stress levels. While a little stress is good, too much stress definitely isn’t. Create some kind of relaxation routine that works for you, whether it’s going to a local yoga class, taking a walk in the park, playing relaxing music in the background, or engaging in something like meditation. Whichever method works best for you, stick to it on a reasonably regular basis, as our bodies are often slow to adjust to the idea that our stress levels can actually be reduced.
