Three points to understand travel in New Zealand

New Zealand’s popularity as a tourist destination has grown dramatically in recent years, and the country welcomes tourists not only from neighboring Australia and Asia, but from all over the world. This country has a lot to offer: magnificent nature that is largely unaffected by human activities, unique cultural traditions, and diverse adventures. You just need to know what to expect from traveling in the country.

Best time to visit

There is so much to explore in New Zealand in all seasons. You can enjoy all kinds of adventures in the Bay of Islands in the summer, the white slopes of Queenstown in the winter, and the enchanting gardens of Christchurch in the summer and fall. There is literally something to do at any time of the year.

The peak tourist season in New Zealand is summer, which includes the months of December, January and February. The busiest time is around and right after Christmas until mid-January. If you plan to travel in and around the country during this time, it is important that you make accommodation reservations well in advance. This is true even if you plan to rent a motorhome and stay on RV sites. These may be complete by the time you get there.

Move

New Zealand has an excellent road network and first-class public transport services. Within cities, you can use public buses and other public transportation services. To travel around the country, it is recommended to travel by road. There are plenty of slightly rugged, but reliable highways and small gravel roads in remote areas. The railway connects only a handful of major cities, so you won’t be able to explore most of the country if you travel by train.

When traveling by road, it is best to rent a car or a camper van. The latter option is particularly attractive as it allows you to travel across the country from Auckland on the North Island to Queenstown. There are numerous campgrounds where you can stay throughout the country. However, one important thought to keep in mind is that free camping is not allowed by local law.

Planning your trip

There are many things to see and do in New Zealand, so it is best if you plan your trip in advance. The best places to visit include Auckland, the Bay of Islands, which offers sailing, swimming and whale watching opportunities, Abel Tasman National Park, Queenstown, known for its beautiful natural surroundings and various adventure activities, Wellington and Christchurch.
