Is a locksmith a dangerous job?

There are dangers that come with every line of work, and the locksmith trade is no different. Most people would not consider the trade of a locksmith dangerous, but sometimes it can be. So what are some of the most common dangers locksmiths can face in their work?

The dangers can be both physical and fiscal.

Sometimes locksmiths will be called in to work in a potentially dangerous area, such as a bad neighborhood or a correctional facility. They may be accompanying a police officer or sheriff’s deputy during situations like liens and enforcement entries, a situation that can sometimes turn sour. They may be required to work at night, in unfamiliar areas.

Due to the nature of their occupation, locksmiths have access to confidential information, tools, and equipment that can also be used for nefarious purposes. That must be closely guarded, so that it does not fall into the wrong hands. Another safety consideration to keep in mind has to do with hiring employees with questionable backgrounds.

As a locksmith, you are responsible for all aspects of your customer’s security. You can be sued for giving advice and for failing to do so. Accidents can happen! Both you as a locksmith and the staff you hire have the potential to cause personal injury and property damage to your client. It is also responsible for damages caused to its employees and third parties.

To protect themselves, locksmiths must always ensure that the person requesting their services is really who they claim to be, and be aware of their surroundings at all times. If you find a locksmith helping open a home or car to someone other than the occupant, you will be liable and possibly face legal lawsuits.

A locksmith should arm himself with his license and insurance, and know his rights. Before doing business with someone, you need to make sure you have properly assessed the situation. You will come across people like intruders, angry ex-spouses, disgruntled family or business partners, and similar individuals who can make the job of a locksmith more difficult than it should be. As a locksmith, you have to accept the fact that you just go with the territory!
