Temperament: The Sussex Spaniel needs plenty of daily exercise and this will help keep the dog calm indoors. This dog is more reserved than most of the Spaniel family. This dog loves to hunt and will be enthusiastic throughout the hunt, rarely sitting still. Their ability to bark is displayed on the hunt where they will bark non-stop. This is also a great companion dog and loves everything he meets and is friendly with a lot of loyalty. This breed is wonderful with children and can get along with cats in the home. This dog is part of the Spaniel family but has less energy and is not as playful. They want and need a good pack leader to bring out the best in this breed.

Sussex Spaniels need good, consistent training as they can be slow to learn. But with firm, not harsh, training and good leadership, they do. Make it clear to the dog that you are the owner and that your rules are established, this will avoid problems such as being agile. This breed needs a good regular exercise every day. As this dog is prone to weight gain, it is important that he is given daily opportunities to walk and exercise, to keep the weight down, otherwise this can cause back problems for the Sussex Spaniel. They love to follow scents and will like to swim if the opportunity arises. This dog loves the outdoors and will enjoy running through fields and forests. If they are not given enough exercise, one of the things they will do is howl to let you know that they need to walk more.

Health Problems – As with many spaniels, the Sussex Spaniel can have ear problems. They may also have intervertebral disc syndrome, heart murmurs, an enlarged heart, and may gain too much weight, so good portion and snack control is important. As with any dog, it is very important that you make sure they are up to date on all vaccinations, deworming, and heartworm preventatives. Most licensed veterinarians also suggest that you take your puppy or dog in for a checkup at least twice a year.

Grooming – For the Sussex Spaniel, you should brush the coat regularly and pluck when you see lighter hair as it is dead. Take care of the ears weekly and check that the bottoms of the feet are regularly trimmed of any hair.

Living Conditions: The Sussex Spaniel can live well in an apartment if he has been walked every day. They will need a garden but it doesn’t have to be big.
