The four great alpine ski countries for family skiing

When it comes to downhill skiing, there are four main countries in which to take the family skiing. With a wide variety of resorts and perfect conditions, the ‘Big Four’ share this name for a reason. Here is an introductory guide to what to expect on a ski holiday in each country.

Italy

While not as visited as its other big four peers, Italy is nonetheless a fantastic country for skiing. The Dolomites mountain range offers endless ski slopes and the popular resort of Val Gardena is ideal for experiencing true Italian culture and a warm welcome, making it a great place to ski with children.

What it lacks in kick drum it makes up for in minimal lift queue times and quieter slopes. With Italy ski breaks, you’ll not only enjoy great skiing and excellent resorts, but also all the benefits of an Italian holiday, with an overtly friendly atmosphere and excellent cuisine – also a big hit with the kids!

France

From the least popular to one of the most; France is among the most visited ski resorts in the world. Its easy access and fantastic skiing conditions in the surrounding Alps contribute to the statistic showing that 40 per cent of Britons name France as their preferred ski destination. Access and comfort are the main draws of a ski vacation in France, but the snow conditions and variety of slopes are added bonuses for the ski family.

The wide variety of resorts on offer in France also adds to its appeal, as there is an option for every skill level and taste. Alpe d’Huez and La Rosière are great options for novices, Courchevel is great for those looking to test their skills, and Tignes is the perfect all-rounder for every ski family.

Austria

The resorts in Austria really look after their guests and act as the perfect setting for teaching children to ski, with a wide variety of runs to assess skiers’ progress. Austria, like Italy, is another excellent option for families looking for a more complete ski vacation experience. As well as the slopes, there is a great culture to immerse yourself in and its traditions are evident at every turn.

Swiss

Similarly, Switzerland hasn’t lost its charm under all the snow and skiers, with some quaint towns to visit for a family ski holiday. With guaranteed powder, Switzerland is the safe bet and a crowd pleaser that makes for an ideal family vacation. For a truly beautiful stay, opt for the picturesque resort of Saas Fee, also a hit with the kids for its huge bowl of glacial snow!
