San Francisco Food Trucks and Food Carts: The Best of the Best

Like in most other big cities, the trend for gourmet food trucks and food carts is in full swing here in San Francisco. It’s also pretty surprising, considering the fact that San Francisco has yet to change its legislation to better accommodate this growing food trend, as other cities have. But maybe all the fight and determination it takes to open a food truck in San Francisco makes the food that much better!

Here are some of the most popular gourmet food carts and trucks in SF, along with their Twitter names so you know where to find them:

* One of the most popular is the one-man operation, the cream brle cart. Serve hot, uniquely flavored creams like Mexican Chocolate, Lavender, and Honey Vanilla. Follow him on @cremebruleecart.

* Another basic is the magic kart of curry. You wouldn’t expect such a delicious chicken and vegetable curry to come from a little cart covered in neon lights, but it does! And, if you bring your own bowl, you get a discount. @magiacurrykart

* Probably the most gourmet gourmet food truck, Spencer on the go!, is a side project of the French restaurant Chez Spencer. They serve up a twist on traditional French fare like snail “lollipops,” grilled sweet breads, and ratatouille. Follow them at @chezspencergo.

* Tea President Bao Bun Truck it serves gooey buns and steamed (and, oddly enough, baked) Chinese omelettes. Fan favorites include the pork belly with pickled daikon bread and the Chinese sausage and egg sandwich with hoisin. @chairmantruck.

And if you can’t decide which food cart to try, try them all! Recently started a new gastronomic tradition called Off the grid — a collection of street food markets around the Bay Area. Each market features at least five vendors and often some live music. They currently have three weekly locations: Fort Mason Center, Upper Haight, and Civic Center.
